I wish I loved cooking as much as I love reading cookbooks. Some of these recipes might change my mind for sure. It's more focused on the recipes than a guide to keto but if you're already up on getting into ketosis tasty new recipes are all you need.

I like the authors transparency in sharing her early thoughts about her then boyfriend going on the Ketogenic diet. She thought he would die on this bacon butter diet, until she investigated it further. Grin!

Her thoughts, "How could anyone survive without spaghetti or macaroni and cheese? What about cake?"

In her research she discovered the diet could reduce anxiety and starve cancer…fast forward a bit she says, "I've lost almost 100 pounds…and my vertigo is virtually nonexistent. I sleep great at night, wake up early, have energy throughout the day, am mentally clear instead of in a constant brain fog, and feel like a new person…" "I've spent the last 7 years developing a whole-food-focused approach to the ketogenic diet for myself. On a blog titled WickedStuff.com… "In this book you'll find the results of years experimenting with new flavors and ingredients…The ketogenic diet can be as simple or as complicated as you make it."

The author walks the readers through Keto Nutrition, how to calculate Net Carbs, shares the difference between Paleo and Keto diets. I also found her talk about Ghee informative too.

There's a helpful Foods to Enjoy and Foods to Avoid chart
"The ketogenic recipes in this book are as close as we can get to a whole food approach to keto while still keeping it delicious every step of the way"

Her 10 Tips for Keeping Keto Costs Down are very helpful. I made the following recipes that my family and I liked very much. Lemon-Garlic Chicken and Green Beans with Caramelized Onions, Lemon Cream Zoodles with Sweet Main Lobster, Fresh-Cut Herb and Butter Zoodles, and Bacon-Ranch Broccoli Bites.

Each recipe has the servicing size marked up top with the Prep Time and Cooking time.

The author talks about the recipe first then clearly gives instructions and, on the side, lists the ingredients. I found her $ symbols helpful in helping a family stick to a budget. At the bottom of every recipe are the nutritional break down, a Keto, Recipe and/or how to make Paleo friendly tips

The author is very creative in giving foods great flavor without it being too complicated. The sections in the book are Breakfast, Drinks, Shakes and Smoothies, Snacks, Salad, Side Dishes and Zoodles, Fish & Shellfish, Beef and Lamb, Pork, Chicken and Desserts.

I want to try most of the recipes and many of the desserts too. At the end the author includes a four-week menu plan to help you get started on the Keto life style. The only thing this book is missing are beautiful pictures of food for every recipe. There is one picture per section. I would have liked a picture for more of the recipes.

A solid book with realistic, appealing recipes. Hughes starts out with a friendly introduction to what the Ketogenic Diet entails. A solid book with realistic, appealing recipes. Hughes starts out with a friendly introduction to what the Ketogenic Diet entails. There's a lot to cover, but Hughes moves quickly, offering only the basics. Who is this introduction for? Someone well versed in Keto, doesn't need this entry level primer and someone who doesn't know much won't learn enough to make a decision on whether to try the Ketogenic Diet.

The recipes are well organized and made from common foods. Most of the recipes can be made for a reasonable price and a lot of the ingredients overlap, which makes meal planning simpler. On the flip side, sometimes I was left longing for more diversity. All the recipes felt so related and similar I wondered if there was something a little more I could do to bring in new flavor. I wonder if a cook book done up for seasonal produce or for taste profiles might have been more interesting, if less easier to reference.

Hughes cautions that she cooks with a lot of diary and she doesn't exaggerate. Not here to discuss the pros and cons of diary, simply suggesting that if one wishes to cook diary free, this is not the correct cook book.

The organization with breakfast, shakes, snacks, main courses (arranged by protein) and closing with fat bombs/ sauces was adequate. Someone browsing for certain kinds of food or how to cook a specific protein, can skim through with ease. I was disappointed there wasn't a vegetarian section. A HUGE part of my Keto lifestyle is vegetarian/vegan friendly and I'm always looking for great ways to work with avocado, spinach, kale, collards, broccoli, cauliflower. Brussel sprouts, nuts/butters, sunflowers/chia.

I appreciated the dietary informations Hughes provides with macros. I only wish she'd gone a little further and given a break down of vitamins and minerals in the meals. I ended up looking up zucchini myself (I'm not a fan of Zoodles so I don't eat as much zucchini as Hughes recipes suggest). Turns out these meals, while not as high in veg as I would like, appear well balanced. That made me happy and makes recommending the book simpler but it would be a nice detail to add the information in at the end of the recipes so others don't have to look it up.

I was disappointed with the lack of pictures. Part of the fun of recipe books are the stunning photos. Still, overall it was a good guide. The meals have inexpensive ingredients one can easily pick up, and the direction are easy to follow. A great beginning Keto cookbook.

You'll notice that most of these reviews say "I can't wait to try some of these". I wish they would have before giving it five stars. I'd still recommend this book, but not at full price. So far the recipes have been suggestions, not finished dishes. At least the ones you bake; I'm sure the stovetop and grill recipes are easier to get right.

****************************

These recipes are very, very tasty. I had to take off a star, though, because so far I've had to make adjustments to everything. Some are just cosmetic - AMERICAN cheese on the Philly Cheesesteak Meatloaf? Binch please! My corner store didn't have provolone, so I used mozzarella (some people substitute Swiss when making actual sandwiches).

However, I have my fingers crossed with the one I have in the oven now - Morning Meatloaf. I have high hopes; eggs, sausage, two kinds of cheese, one bowl and one pan. My idea of heaven! But, it said to combine ingredients until you can roll it into a ball ... of course, just like regular meatloaf. I've been making that kind for 40 yrs, I know what it looks like. And, I know the best way to do it is with your hands! But no matter how small I squished the sausage pieces, with 12 eggs, it was never thicker than pancake batter. I poured it into the loaf pan and it looks ok. As long as it tastes OK, I'll be happy.

I didn't take off more stars because the non-keto menfolk in the house love everything so far. I didn't TELL them that last night's pork chops were crusted with crushed walnuts and Parmesan, because it sounds weird. They loved it, though. So yes, I recommend this book, but if you're a beginner cook and something looks different than the book says it should, maybe it's them, not you. ;)

Cookbook author and longtime ketogenic chef Amanda Hughes advises that the ketogenic diet is really more of a lifestyle change than a diet because it not only changed the way she eats, it changed the way she lives. I was very happy to receive a review copy of this book from the publisher. The author's personal success story is nicely written and can be motivating for someone ready to follow a keto lifestyle. It's not just a diet, it's a lifestyle and the author emphasizes that. There are a number of recipes in several categories that I can't wait to try. My biggest concern is that there are no illustrations for the recipes. I like to see the final product in pictures not only to know if I made it correctly, but to decide if I want to make it or not. It's always nice to see the plate presentation for a recipe. One big plus is that most of the recipes do not require special ingredients or use sweeteners unless absolutely necessary.

The list of resources and websites is helpful. I would have liked to see a list of apps as well.

I love cooking and we are always looking for new recipes. While I am not on the Keto diet, we have cut down carbs and I thought this cookbook would have some great ideas.

I will admit I am not 100% sold by this cookbook. The main reason I was not a fan was because this cookbook did not have any real images of the food. Another thing I noticed were some recipes were very simple as if they were taken off a search engine.

As for the pros, I like how they included how expensive the dish is to make.

Overall I am not too impressed with this cookbook. I liked sifting through ideas, but I did not like the overall cookbook. Probably not a cookbook I would have purchased.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine and were in no way influenced by outside sources. I am a professional blogger at Little Lady Plays

This is a well written book that contains recipes to guide you through the day on a ketogenic diet, including smoothies, breakfast omelettes, snacks and entrees. I also includes a nifty 4 week meal planner that summarizes your meals for a whole month.

Also included are snacks such as coffee smoothie, avocado smoothie and a cheesecake shake. Not every recipe has a picture included, but the book just contains the right amount of images to make your mouth water.

Great cookbook by Amanda. I love love her website/blog and am on there a couple times a week. I've already made about 5-10 of her recipes with much success every time. Great job Amanda.

I wish there was a little more about the author and her story though, a little more in depth and personal journey through Keto. However I understand this is just really a cookbook

Not a bad cookbook, but not for me. Most of the recipes include tons of cream cheese or heavy cream, which doesn't agree with me. Some good recipes in here, though I found most to be overly complicated. There are no pictures. I noticed at least 1 recipe called for coconut sugar, which isn't technically ketogenic. I especially appreciate an author who lists complete nutritional information with each recipe. This makes it easier to put together a daily meal plan.
